PPG introduces mixer for high-volume chemical mixing of SEMKIT packages

July 15, 2016

A new SEMCO® mixer by PPG offers high-volume automated, precision mixing of multi-component adhesives, sealants and other chemicals in SEMKIT® packages, reducing operator fatigue, enhancing quality and improving productivity.

Designed for both barrier-style and injection-style Semkit cartridges, the Semco 1088 mixer ensures homogeneous chemical distribution with one-touch adjustment for the five most common Semkit package configurations used in the aerospace industry. In addition, the mixer is the first in the Semco packaging and application systems line by PPG that can automatically inject and evenly distribute the correct amount of catalyst into a prefilled injection-style Semkit package, ensuring that the material meets application and performance requirements.

According to Dillon Desai, PPG Aerospace global market development manager for packaging, the new mixer is designed for today’s high-volume aircraft production and maintenance environments for mixing Semkit packages with ease, efficiency and repeatability.

“With record commercial aircraft backlogs, manufacturers are looking for the right tools to ramp up production and increase deliveries,” Desai said. “The Semco 1088 mixer was developed to address the aerospace industry’s unprecedented demand for quicker chemical mixing while affording more consistency.”

Semkit packages have long provided the aerospace industry with a method for storing and mixing sealants and adhesives at customized mixing ratios,” said Goldi Singh, global engineering manager for Semco packaging and application systems. “PPG now offers an expanded line of options including portable, tabletop and automated mixers that enable customers to streamline their operations and ensure quality and efficient mixing of chemicals.”

The Semco 1088 mixer has earned the European Union’s CE safety, health and environmental certification. An adjustable stroke counter ensures the proper number of strokes is achieved every time. The easy-to-use Semkit package ruler allows the operator to identify the Semkit package being mixed to minimize errors while catering to a wide range of Semkit package configurations.

According to Singh, PPG designed the mixer with a pneumatic motor because it has been shown to be more robust than an electric-pneumatic system and manages high-viscosity chemicals well.
